Back from Bristol!

It was great to meet everybody there and we all had a complete blast. Futurequake did better than we could have hoped and has almost broken even.



Work is now beginning on the next issue, with the script editors reading feverishly to determine the tales for issue 5.

Jon & Gorath 04 & FutureQuake! launch

This is the biggest week of the year so far. Saturday and sunday see the Bristol comic Expo happening, and the launch of what seems to be the largest amount of UK smallpress yet.

2000adreview's Small press round-up has a partial list of the titles available, but there are many that aren't on this list.

Lost Property and Tales of the contrary also launch this week.

This weeks Jon & Gorath was painted by my wife. She did the pic in watercolours over my original ink-lines. I'm thoroughly pleased with the result.

I've also begun work on a new batch of Yammer episodes. I'm hoping to reach the end of runaround robot soon, as I want to tell other stories about the hopeless hero.

This was coloured by my eldest lad, the mighty Mini-Bolt. I've chained him to the monitor till he colours the rest of the strips, so I've decided to hold on to them for now and show the new vwersions as they arrive.

Lost Property is printed ! The contributor copies for the post have been sent, and I am working my way through the rest of them, collating wildly. Hopefully I can sell almost all the run, as that way I can hide the hole in my bank before the wife notices ! We have made the funding for FQ available but I’ve done this out of my own pocket as I needed to, and those colour pages don’t half eat ink !

Tales of the Contrary has reached the stage where the cover is being done, so here are
the rough sketch and
the almost completed final. The tones for this collection are all by Richmond Clements apart from the Complete Revolution strip on the back cover.

The final tale for the collection, The captain, is the only stumbling block left to conquer- I know the illo’s that need to be done, yet I can’t seem to put anything on paper that I’m happy with. Need to relax I suppose and let it happen.

Also this week has seen me enlist Richmond to help with the greyscale on the Ghouls of Grafton Street. Intended for Solar Wind, here are the thumbnails I worked from



The strip has been delivered and Cosmic Ray has given it a thumbs-up, so I’m glad to be an androit once more!

Five minutes before I typed these words I put the finishing touches to FutureQuake and saved the document for the printers. At last. The next thing will be waiting for the printers to tell me I’ve made some awful error in the formatting and the comic is ruined; or not.

Ah well, I finish work today till Tuesday, and the Bolt clan are off to Blackpool for a weekend of roller-coaster action!

Jon & Gorath 02

Hopefully in the next week or two, the Jon & Gorath strip will be moving to colour (at least on a temporary basis) courtesy of the mighty Mini-bolt !

I aim to print the last few pages of Lost Property tomorrow, and I have a page and a half of inks left for the Ghouls of Grafton Street.

Tales of the Contrary is nearing completion, with the last text imminent. Hopefully it will be ready in time for the Bristol Expo.

I have all the art in for FutureQuake, and only two strips to letter. I aim to have it at the printers by this time next week.

Fingers crossed that is.

Presenting :



This is the first episode of a new strip I’ll be running each week till I run out. Written by Mark Woodland, this was the strip that caused me to begin the collection of strips called Lost Property.

In other news, I have begun using InDesign to lay out the pages for Futurequake. The inside cover is getting the most effort as the rest are comic pages.

Work continues on the Ghouls of Grafton street, having reached the third page in the finished pencils leg of the job.

Friday 8th March 2005

This week has seen the final line-up for FQ 04 decided on, resulting in having several strips ‘in the bank’ for 5.

The cover has been prepped for Tales of the Contrary, and I am hoping to receive the final story from Andrew over the weekend, a tale called simply: ‘The Captain.’


Lost Property is almost printed. I just need to get hold of some more A5 paper and it will be complete. As nice as the format for this is, it is snowballing on the expense side. I think next issue (if I do one) will adopt a more traditional look.


I have finished the Whistler strip and have also done illustrations for a story by Richmond Clements, which has possibly the best last line I’ve read this year. I’ve got a sketch from that somewhere….


In other news, I have signed up with Cosmic Ray for another tour of duty with Solar Wind. I am currently pencilling the exploits of a school football team with a difference. A cracking script by Ben Clark ensures that at least the words will be worth reading!

I'm back!

Phew! Been away for a couple of weeks and it has taken me forever to get caught up!

FQ has reached the point where it is all promo work, with flyers and Tee-shirts being designed. We are reaching critical mass on the strips as well, but we have had to lose some of the strips I was really looking forward to, due to circumstances beyond our control.

On a more personal note, I’ve been tinkering with a new Whistler strip for inclusion in the next issue of Dogbreath (on sale at the Bristol Expo) I’ve scanned the pencils for posting here:













Tales of the Contrary is just awaiting one more story to be completed and hopefully that will be ready in time for the expo.

Last night on Earth

This is the rough for the two page strip I've got due to appear in The End is Nigh. Written by Ed Berridge it is the touching tale of a man who is quite literally, on the edge!

Friday 25th February: Last for a couple of weeks

Starting to wind down for a couple of weeks; off to visit Florida for a holiday.

I've finished off almost eveything I'd started and I'm just biding my time till the holiday by working on the Whistler mini strip.

We've had some lovely pages arrive for Futurequake and when I get back it will be full steam ahead on getting that ready for print.

Friday 18th February: Phew!, what a week!

Been a busy old week this week.

I've finished the lineworks for By the book, and the strip is only two pages away from being finished.

I've completed the linework for a second strip for Futurequake; The task by Barny Shergold.

I've reached the halfway through the inks point on a strip for the End is Nigh, which is coming along nicely.

I've thumbnailed the 5 pages for the Dry county strip for DogBreath.

I've even begun pencils on the Whistler mini-strip for Dogbreath.

All in all it has been a most productive week.

This week has been nice and productive, I’ve finished the ink-work for By the book (must remember to scan those sketches over the weekend); the main illustration for the second Inaction Jackson for the mighty Solar Wind and I’ve even begun work on the single page strip ‘The Task’ that Barny Shergold wrote for Futurequake.

I’ve even thuimbnailed the strip for The end is nigh, which is nice.

Tales of the contrary moves apace, with Richmond Clements providing the greytones that are making the pages really sing

This weeks update....

Hi folks, this week has seen me finish inks on the third page of By the Book (only two to go!) and I've made significant progress with two of my other projects.

is coming along very nicely. I'm just waiting for three final strips and thaen it's all systems go. The cover is almost compiled and I've even managed to get the card I wanted for the covers. The back cover is now printed and looks very nice.

is also progressing. I'm still short of one strip, but the text is being created at the moment (hopefully). The biggest news there is that Richmond Clements has come aboard to help me out on the screen-tones front. His work is first rate and I'm really chuffed to have him helping.

A couple of new blogs have started that I've been made aware of: Subatomic-Phuz is by John Kirkham, a contributor to both Futurequake and Lost Property. He has some lovely artwork and a revelaing look at how he puts a page together; The end is nigh is a blog devoted to the upcoming mag of the same name; Andrew Bartlett has recently begun serialising a strip on his Blog that is really good.

Friday 28th January

Howdy folks!

This week I've finished the inks on the first page of By the book, and I've almost completely sorted the Lost Property collection. I'm just waiting on three strips and then it's all systems go!

I even managed to find the A5 card I wanted for the cover- I searched the on-line stores and the large stationery stores nearby to my home; nothing. I looked in at my local copy shop to collect my heavy duty stapler and they've got it on the shelf. Go figure!

I've got Mini-bolt working on a couple of pages of screen-tones for Tales of the Contrary, he wants to do them in colour but It's not a colour book. Hope to see great things, or at least something better than I can do.

I took Mini-bolt to see the Sunday night gig by the incredible Pop Will Eat Itself, and a wonderful time was had. I'd forgotten just how good they sound live. Hoping to be able to afford the Live CD in the next month or so.

This week has seen me finish the pencils for By the Book, I just need to make sure of a few things before I start inking them.

I've finished the last of the first block of Jon & Gorath, for the Lost Property 'zine. So things there are sailing quite nicely.

Fianally I've got the VC's strip ready and hosted. Written by Richmond Clements it is up on the 2000adreview site.

A picture from Tom!



This is the picture that my middle lad, Thomas (5) has done for his calender for the year. I like it enough to want to share it.

This week I've compiled the cover for Lost Property, which just needs text to be finished, and I've been working on two final Jon & Goraths for the same collection. After these I'll move onto getting Tales of the Contrary ready before everything kicks off with Futurequake.

I've been given the font used for the creation of the FQ logo (Cheers Art) so I'm looking at tweaks I can make to the design.

Finally, despite saying last week that I'd run completely dry, I've had ideas for another 4-6 episodes of the Yammer. Hopefully I'll find time to get these on paper soon.

Friday 7th January 2005

Sorry, no strips for the while, but I've sorted a series that I'll begin running when the time is right.

This week has seen me finish the inkwork on the VC's strip for Richmond Clements, which will be going on the 2000adreview website when ready.

I've also been busy organising the deadlines and outstanding jobs for all the various comics I'm involved with for this year.

I've started the strip that I'll be contributing to FQ 4, and I'm happy with what I've done so far.
